Where California struck it rich, and the alpine lake it celebrates with: Old Sacramento's riverboat quarter, Nevada City's gold-rush Victorians and working saloons, Donner Pass's grim history at Truckee, then Tahoe, 500 metres deep, absurdly clear, ringed by granite and white sand at Sand Harbor. Emerald Bay from the Rubicon trail is the Sierra's best postcard.
