About Odycairn
An odyssey is the oldest travel story we have, and it is also a story about bad information. Odysseus was told things by people who had never been there. He guessed, and he lost every man he sailed with.
A cairn is the opposite idea. Someone walked this way, got through, and stacked stones so that whoever came next would know the route was real.
Odycairn is the odyssey without the guessing. Every stop in every plan is a real place that someone has documented, and every day is checked against the clock before it reaches you.
Where the facts come from
Places
Listings come from Wikivoyage under CC BY-SA 4.0. We use them for facts only — names, addresses, opening hours — and write our own descriptions from them.
Time
Driving legs are real road-routed durations rather than straight-line estimates, with a ten percent buffer on top, because nobody drives free-flow on holiday. Rail and ferry legs are timetable-style estimates and we label them as such.
Weather
Climate figures are NASA POWER normals for the month you choose. When your trip begins within two weeks we overlay a live forecast from MET Norway.
Photographs come from Wikimedia Commons under open licences and are credited on every page that shows them.
The part most planners skip
Odycairn will tell you no. If seven days does not fit a route, it does not pad the itinerary with filler to reach seven. It builds the days it can genuinely fill, shows you that number, and explains why it is smaller than the one you asked for. If a category you cared about is thin on a particular route, it says so instead of quietly substituting something else and hoping you will not notice.
A marker in the wrong place is worse than no marker at all.
