One of Europe's oldest lakes with one of its oldest churches on the cliff above: Ohrid once held 365 churches, and St John at Kaneo still earns every photograph. Skopje's statue-mad centre sits beside a proper Ottoman bazaar and the kayakable Matka canyon; Bitola's café street was where consuls promenaded. Deep history, tiny prices.

Lake Ohrid is swimmable, boat taxis run to the cliff monastery at Kaneo, and the Heraclea mosaics bake gently rather than brutally.
