Where Thailand began, and its most graceful ruins: Sukhothai's lotus-bud stupas and the enormous seated Buddha peering through Wat Si Chum's slot, then quieter Si Satchanalai where the kilns that glazed a kingdom still line the riverbank. Lampang closes it with horse carriages and teak temples the crowds forgot. Rent a bicycle; the ruins reward slowness.

Sukhothai & the Northern Plains is a 225 km one-way journey (self-drive). It works best as 3–5 days; the plan below is the 4-day version for December, built from 168 verified places, with real road-routed transit times, opening hours and daylight checked.

Loy Krathong at Sukhothai — where the festival began — floats candlelight across the ruins' ponds in November; cycling the old city is cool-season pleasure.
