Bratislava's castle and old-town streets give way to Banská Štiavnica's mining history, squares and castles, then to the lakeside scenery of Štrbské Pleso in the High Tatras. Drive as far as Poprad, park the car and take the separately ticketed electric railway into the mountains. Summit climbs, steep passes, cable cars and mountain-hut walks need their own plans and suitable conditions.
