From Chennai, head south by road to Mamallapuram's UNESCO-listed monuments, Puducherry's French-quarter streets, Thanjavur's Chola heritage and Madurai's temple city. Living temples and colourful gopurams give the journey its character; guided tours, performances and boat trips are optional.
