From Germany's most romantic ruin to its most complete walled town, castle by castle up the Neckar. Heidelberg earned two centuries of poets; Schwäbisch Hall stacks itself photogenically over its river; Rothenburg ob der Tauber is the medieval town every model railway copies, walk its walls at dawn and have the Middle Ages briefly to yourself.
